Change in the Wind

I must share with you the work of artist Daniel Wurtzel. His sculptural wind installations involve the manipulation of light weight objects being blown by controlled air currents. The resulting dance of twirling and billowing materials appears to be sublimely choreographed.

To fully appreciate the magical qualities of this watch the video below....

I chose to share Wurtzel's work because it directly relates to my most recent paintings that focus on the effects of wind and water currents in the landscape. Below is a work-in-progress from this series.

Year of the Dragon

Wishing you the very best in the New Year and what will soon be the Year of The Dragon when the Chinese New Year officially starts on January 23rd. In the Chinese zodiac the dragon is a symbol for luck, creativity and good fortune. Even those not born under this sign will be influenced by some of the dragon characteristics in the new year. Good reason to feel a little optimistic as we say farewell to 2011 and head into a lucky 2012.

Here's the zodiac description of Dragons: One of the most showy characters of the zodiac chart, you are imaginative, lucky, full of fun, and energetic. Dragons are the doers of the world. You don't sit around waiting for things to happen, you make things happen. You demand perfection from yourself and from others. Dragons make good talk-show hosts, artists or diplomats.

If you haven't guessed it by now...yes, I am a dragon too! Happy New Year friends!

Dark Nostalgia: A Winter's Tale

Ah...what better way to welcome the arrival of the Winter Solstice than with an homage to the snow globe? But look closely and you will soon discover that these are not the kitschy iconic mementos from your childhood. The sugar-dusted fairytale themes of the past are replaced with the gallows humor of artist team Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz. They are the couple behind this series of dark and intriguing vignettes that draw you into their wintry world...

Inspiration...

Ok...so it's just a little teaser from the studio but I can't wait to share more of these images with you as the work unfolds. The finished paintings will be on display in April 2012 as part of my next solo exhibition at the Pacini Lubel Gallery.

In the mean time...I am shining the spotlight today on collaborative artists, Aparna Rao and Soren Pors. They use technology to create interactive works that are ingenious and humorous. My favorite is the installation called Pygmies. Watch the video below to see how this playful piece reacts to sound. Giving Thanks

Feeling grateful today for the abundance that surrounds me on so many levels. Thank you to my family, friends and supporters for enriching my life, giving me inspiration and encouraging me to always move forward. May you all have much to be thankful for in your lives.

While I am on the subject of gratitude…I also want to thank all of you who ventured out to join us at Inscape for the Open Studios. Thanks to you it was a huge success and a wonderful day filled with art and conversation. For those of you who missed it don’t despair…there will be a Grand Opening for the Inscape building when all the construction is complete. This should be sometime during the Spring of 2012 and I will keep you posted on the details when the time comes.

The images in this post are all details from the painting above. I featured it because it makes me think of abundance. I’ll be posting more from this new body of work soon. Today I am wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving ~ Alicia

Sticky Situation - The Gum Wall

Ok...this is so gross that it's cool. Talk about your sticky situations. A visit to Seattle's Gum Wall becomes an interactive art experience. For those of you not familiar with this odd attraction it's located in Post Alley just off of the famous Pike Place Market. As you follow the cobble stone street it leads you to one of the city's quirkiest sites, the Market Theater Gum Wall. Here is where you will find the chewy remains of thousands upon thousands of gum wads all stuck to the wall in a fascinating display of gooey glory. Since 1993 visitors have stuck their chewed blobs of gum to the brick wall where some parts are covered several inches thick, over 15 feet high and sprawling for more than 50 feet down the alleyway. Its a wonderful example of spontaneous participatory installation art where each visitor adds there little bit and contributes to this growing mass of gummy art.

Artist Spotlight: Julia Haack

In the spotlight today is Inscape artist Julia Haack . Working in salvaged wood she combines elements of design, craft and fine art to create sculptural works she calls “Wall Constructions’. These pieces have the pop of modern art and the familiar patterning of a vintage quilt.

Artist Spotlight: Fred Lisaius

Fred Lisaius is the next artist in the ongoing Inscape Spotlight series. Lisaius is best known for his distinctive depictions of flora and fauna.

Fred's work is currently on display at the Schomburg Gallery in Santa Monica, California through November 29th. A solo exhibition of his newest work will open in January 2012 at the Linda Hodges Gallery in Seattle.

Lisaius had this to say about his method...“Experimenting with ideas and techniques is an important part of my time spent in the studio. I like to apply paint in different ways to see what kind of marks and textures I can achieve with each brush or tool. Sometimes the most beautiful marks are made with the most humble tools.”

"ART" OF JUSTICE...On his studio door you’ll find a creative reinterpretation of the Department of Justice insignia left behind by the former occupants.

Today’s featured Inscape artist is painter Tracy Boyd. She works with oils and acrylic to produce her powerful large-scale paintings.

Boyd says “ Painting is a very physical and emotional process for me. Through trial and error, the painting evolves through many phases to completion as I search for and recognize the most damaging, loving, and recognizable “being” in it.”

Artist Spotlight: Patti Bowman

As we all gear up for the upcoming Open Studios event here at INSCAPE I thought I would take time out to introduce you to some of the other artists that occupy the spaces here. The image above was created by encaustic painter, Patti Bowman, who will have her door open on the 4th floor.

With a style that I would call “earthy urbanism”, Bowman demonstrates an amazing level of control over the typically unruly medium of encaustic. Her paintings were recently on display at the Tashiro Kaplan building in Seattle.

Studio Update

INSCAPE ARTS | Open Studios...

It’s already been a year since I relocated my studio to Inscape and it’s also been that long since the entire building opened up to the general public. So break out your calendars and save the date for Saturday, November 12, 2011 and the Inscape Arts Open Studios event in Seattle. Come see how artists and creative thinkers continue to transform the former I.N.S. Building into Seattle’s next premier enclave of creative enterprise. Look for me in studio 108 on the 1st floor.

Happening right now in the studio…

I am finishing up a large commission for the Virginia Mason Medical Center and working on some small experiments with a focus on color. The image above is a detail of the foreground painting shown below. I have always favored an autumnal pallet . Can't get enough of these warm colors and spiked pod forms that continue to fascinate me.

Still on display for a few more days…at Foster/White the work of glass artist Elin Christopherson features an array of blown glass beakers that contain a mysterious fermenting concoction that “burps” through the trumpet like stoppers as the potions produce their own gases.

The various liquids themselves are quite beautiful in an array of liquid pastel colors. Each bottle comes with it’s own recipe for the fermenting process.

Gallery 206...

Touted as Seattle’s smallest gallery and the brainchild of photographer Todd Jannausch is the installation of Gallery 206. The concept is a phone booth installed in Occidental Park in Pioneer Square. The booth features the work of 206 Seattle area artists and displays visual and audio installations as well as a phonebook containing artwork. Oh.. did I mention that I am one of the artists invited to participate? I’m in the book!

Tonight on Art Zone, Nancy Guppy features a segment on the emerging art spaces at INScape where my studio is located. The video really captures the essence of the building and what it’s like to be a working artist in the former INS building. The show includes some great commentary by my studio neighbor, Michael Cepress, who very thoughtfully sums up my feelings about INScape as well. There are some quick cameo snippets of me working in the studio: a few seconds in at the opening of the segment and another snippet mid-way through. Also among those featured are the dancers from Manifold Motion and artist, Michael Harrison. You can view the video below. The show will first air tonight on Channel 21 at 8pm and again at 11:30 with additional repeats and airtime on PBS 9. Check out the Seattle Channel’s website for more air dates.

Going with the Flow

Emerald explorations are emerging... as a juicy pallet of greens (with infusions of blue and amber ) keeps flowing on my worktable this week. Here are a few detail images of what’s taking shape in the studio...

Had to show you the close-up details on this one because the size, about 24" x 80 ", makes it a challenge to capture the richness of the surface.

This weekend the Pratt Fine Art Center will hold it's 29th Annual Fine Art Auction at the Bell Harbor Conference Center in Seattle. I am honored to have one of my paintings selected for the LIVE auction portion of this event. The funds raised support Pratt and its many wonderful programs.

Theodore Waddell: Spirit of the Modern West

The spirit of the west is alive and well on the working ranch of artist Theodore Waddell. I was recently invited to his studio for a visit and was immediately impressed by how prolific he is as an artist.

My favorite piece ...this little bronze horse and rider.

Above is a detail of the heavy texture and thick application of paint that carries Waddell's work beyond the Western genre and into a more contemporary realm of art.

The studio, located on a small ranch in central Idaho, is housed in an actual barn that is also home to his many horses. In the back is a large area devoted to painting where generous mounds of oil paint line a well-used worktable and several works-in-progress hang on the surrounding walls.

In addition to paintings, Waddell is a writer, sculptor and print maker with a fully functioning press at one end of his studio and a separate metal shop in the room next door. Nothing is off limits to Waddell, who once incorporated into one of his paintings the carcass of a coyote he found as road kill.

Clearly inspired by his life in the West but rooted in a fine arts background, Waddell’s work straddles genres and can hold its own in a more a contemporary art setting. Hot Spots

May highlights from First Thursday’s art walk: The work of John Dempcy was featured last month at the Grover Thurston Gallery but you can still see some of his mesmerizing spot paintings on the upper level of the gallery.

This piece by Kenna Moser is from Recollection: Solo show at Grover Thurston.

On the main floor of Grover Thurston are the charming works of Kenna Moser in her show titled, Recollection. Her delightful mixed media works are small in scale and her imagery congers up enchanted stories of a Lilliputian universe…on display May 5 – 28.

At Greg Kucera the work of Darren Waterston is featured in a solo show titled, Kingdom. This exhibition features oil paintings, small gouache works on paper and some intriguing sculptural pieces. I am drawn to the intuitive painting style of Waterston's work. I find his art a bit dark but strangely appealing. Show runs April 7 – May 28.

Finally… I had to pop into the Catherine Person Gallery for the farewell exhibition: It’s All Good: A paper Survey, featuring works done on and with paper as the primary medium. The standouts for me were three pieces done by Justin Lytle where the shredded pages of books spill out from their covers and cascade down into a skirt-like form that has been beautifully washed in color.

I was also captivated by this delicate paper sphere piece by Teresa Redden. This is only 2.5 inches in diameter. There are some other shows worth seeing that I did not include in this post so I encourage you to get out and make a few discoveries of your own.

On the Air

The Seattle Channel paid a visit to the studio a few days ago and filmed me at work on a new painting. This will air as part of a larger segment on Art Zone in a few weeks. The program showcases the INScape Arts Building and it’s transformation from the former home of the federal Immigration and Naturalization Services to the burgeoning artist enclave that it is now becoming. The episode will air on June 3rd and I will post the time and a link to the video when it’s available. So stay tuned…

This week I met up with my friend and fellow encaustic painter, Joyce Gehl, for my own private viewing of her current solo exhibition at the Patricia Rovzar Gallery. The show titled, Flight of the Caterpillar, features Gehl’s lush and layered photo-encaustics that depict ethereal landscapes and macro views of nature.

I was struck by the beauty and texture of her finished surfaces. To fully appreciate the subtleties that make her work so compelling you need to see these paintings in person. My afternoon with Joyce continued on and from the gallery show we headed over to TASTE in the Seattle Art Museum for a delightful lunch and another peek at my show that is still on display there thru June 12th. We then headed back to my studio for an exchange of ideas about studio spaces, working with encaustic and the importance of connecting with other creative professionals. As studio artists we both often work in isolation and as encaustic painters we also share some of the same challenges and rewards that are unique to working with wax. So "thank you" Joyce for the inspiring art-filled afternoon.

I had another artist drop by the studio just moments after Joyce left... but I will share that with you in another post. Cheers for now...Alicia

High Fiber

The sumptuous fiber-based sculptures of Cameron Mason are the feature of Soft Earth, a solo exhibition of Mason’s work opening at Foster/White on April 7^{th -}This show combines two of her distinctive forms: Blades and Cotyledons.

"The Cotyledons series examines the energy of growth as it bursts forth from the stasis of the contained seed. Shaken from a packet and pushed into damp soil by a child’s finger or planted by the million by an industrial agribusiness, the seed is an essential building block of culture. A fragile miracle of nature, the seed sprouts and feeds the hungry" says Mason.

She goes on to say..."The Blades series explores shape as a metaphor for human interaction with the natural world. Obsidian, fractured into faceted shards from solid stone, creates a sharp, cutting edge. Hoes till and reap. We can focus on a single blade of grass in the expanse of a field for just a moment before it is lost among the many.

Cave In!

Ooh la la…The Seattle Art Museum is opening a new Nick Cave exhibition!

SAM presents: Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth. The show opens March 10^th and promises to be quite fantastical! I have long enjoyed the playful inventive works of Nick Cave and you can read a little more about him from a Blog post I wrote in 2009. The show will be up from March 10 to June 5 - Check out the SAM for more details.

In the spirit of the Nick Cave show, the SAM Gallery is featuring an exhibition called Transformations also opening this Thursday, March 10^th. Featuring several wonderful artists who recycle, re-purpose and reuse discarded materials to create their artwork.

While were on the subject of the SAM… a reminder that my show at Taste Restaurant opens next Wednesday, March 16^th! For a fun art-filled evening pop in for a cocktail and then head up to the Nick Cave exhibition! Sounds like a perfect evening of art to me!

Bloom & Close

Thought I caught a glimpse of my future in this mesmerizing crystal ball. It appeared to be floating here while water seeped out from the top and created what I would call a thin skin of water around the sphere.The effect is hypnotizing. This and many other spectacles of nature are on display at the Northwest Flower & Garden show. What a great way to escape the winter chill and find some inspiration among the fragrant displays of spring flowers and fantasy gardens.

The image above is a living chandelier. Plants spiral down a trough-like frame that is lit from within. I give them credit for a great concept but I think it could have been better executed.

This glorious Japanese Maple specimen is over 100 years old and the soul essence of this tree is palpable when you are standing near it. I watched as passers-by stopped in their tracks and gasped with appreciation.

Studio Visit with Anne Siems

The voyeur in me always enjoys a sneak peek into the studios of other artists so I was thrilled when painter Anne Siems sent me some images of her art and studio space to share. Her work is mesmerizing with so much intricate detail and her studio space looks so cozy and inspiring.

In 1991 I moved from Berlin, Germany to Seattle after finishing my MFA at the Hochschule der Kunste Berlin. While in Berlin I had a large studio and worked on large –scale, room filling drawings of semi-abstract organic shapes.

In Seattle, I had a small desk and a little bit of wall space. I started working on waxed found paper (mostly newsprint and paper bags) using pen, ink and acrylic paint. The imagery became more precise. Multiple delicate images overlapped in a sketch like manner, with usually one large central form dominating the final composition.

At present, I continue with my interest in the human figure and the attributes that surround it. These attributes reflect something about the being without giving a specific narrative. Ideas about life and death, sensuality, sexuality, nature, experiences in the realm of dreams, psyche and spirit are my ongoing topic. A lot of inspiration for these pieces stem from my ongoing love for the art of the European Masters, Early American Folk Art, as well as vintage and modern photography.

In March the SAM Gallery will feature my work in a two-person show with artist, Anne Siems, at the Taste Restaurant located in the the Seattle Art Museum. I will post more images and a show update in the coming weeks but wanted to share one of Anne's amazing paintings with you today. Her works are delicate and detailed with a haunting narrative quality to them. Next week I will share additional images of her studio space and a preview of our art that will hang at Taste from March 16th to June 12th, 2011.

My Intro to Encaustic workshop starts tomorrow and I can't wait to host new students in my studio. Next class will be a 3-day Intensive from April 8th through 10th in Seattle. Contact the studio to register.

Statement:

This recent collection of paintings is titled Trespassing: A Venture Beyond Boundaries. Generally speaking the word trespass has a negative definition but the context here is one of risk and adventure. Stepping beyond boundaries from the known to what has not yet been discovered is the underlying theme of this work. As a painter I enjoy taking risks and often find myself on the edge of a boundary between what I know will happen and the chance of ruining the artwork. I create my paintings with a small blowtorch and the flame often acts as my brush. The risk here is ever present as one wrong flash of the torch and months of work can be destroyed in seconds. That constant threat hovers as each piece evolves and reveals a unique story to me. As this latest group of paintings emerged I began to feel as though I was discovering a new pristine valley. This appeared to be a sacred place that had never been mapped or charted. I imagined myself the surveyor, the tourist, the witness peering into a lost and forbidden land. I found myself trespassing.

Witness Tree

I have been painting night and day these last few weeks as I finish up the work for my upcoming show, Trespassing, that opens in only 9 more days.The painting featured above is titled Witnesses and is based on the surveyor's term: Witness Tree. This refers to the trees close to a section corner. The surveyor blazed them and noted their position relative to the corner in his notebook. Witness trees are used as evidence for the corner location. I think it sounds like poetry. This show is inspired by the idea of crossing defined boundaries in an attempt to discover new territory so some of the work is titled after survey and land use terms.

Work is starting to pile up in the studio.

Several very large-scale encaustic works will be featured in this show and I hope you’ll join me at the Pacini Lubel Gallery for the opening event on February 3rd from 6 to 8. Once I wrap up all the art and finish my pre-show details I will share some additional work images and post my artist statement.

Art in Costa Rica

I am just back from a magical holiday retreat to Costa Rica and I feel compelled to share some of the amazing modern art I discovered in the capital city of San Jose. One of my stops was a visit to the Costa Rica Museum of Art where they allowed me to photograph a few of my favorite images. This museum is housed in what was once the country's first airport and the works are focused on the contemporary art of this charming Central American country.

The collection is small but rich and enticing and well worth the trip. I gravitated toward these soulful portraits all created by Costa Rican artists over the past century. At the top of this entry is a detail from a larger work created by Fernando Carballo Jimenez in 1980 titled ,Custodia, and is my favorite piece in the collection. Below are several other works and I hope I successfully translated all of the artist's names because everything was presented in Spanish. As we approached San Jose airport I captured this image of the beautiful aqua green coastline of Lake Nicaragua with my IPhone. I was thinking of inspiration for a painting at the time. On our return flight I snapped the photo on the right of Redondo Beach and the Puget Sound. Later I was amused by the yin yang of these two images. Arriving...departing... returning... Now I am ready for a fresh new year and wishing you all the best that the New Year can bring! Cheers!

Solstice at the Equinox

Last night I attended the Annual Open House event at the Equinox Studios located in the south Seattle industrial area known as Georgetown. Even the torrential rains did not keep art enthusiasts away and the place was packed. The studios here are filled with some very talented folks in a wide range of creative disciplines. One of my favorite aspects of the evening was the poetry readings. The first took place on an improvised platform appropriately called the Fork Lift Stage.

Because the Equinox building is located in a heavy industrial area it's studios are well suited to artisans working in more rugged art forms such as blacksmiths, sculptors and custom fabricators. One metal worker caught my eye because who could resist picking up a little chainmail? Especially when it's made by an artist who goes by the name Tobasco.

Meanwhile...back in my studio...slow but steady progress is being made as I paint my way up the path to my next solo show opening in February 2011. Still working on an exhibition title but today I settled on “Remote Regions”.

Enchanted

A flash caught my eye as I was getting out of my car a few days ago. Something stood out against the grays of the urban landscape and as I bent down to inspect it I discovered this amazing red leaf. The spotting and discoloration reminds me of a ribcage or spinal column. “Such beautiful decay.” I thought to myself as I scooped it up and brought it into the studio. This leaf has stirred something but I am not sure what the results will be yet. Right now it’s just a feeling, that flutter of inspiration mixed with intuition that comes before the act of creating. The next step is to translate all of that into an image. Perhaps it will just manifest as a color pallet in reds, golds, tobacco…or as a simple composition. It’s quite possible that by the time the work is completed the leaf's influence will be so far removed that it will be imperceptible. Still, it represents a wonderful jumping off point and I am feeling the pull of this tiny red leaf as it waits for me in the studio.

Maybe it’s my state of mind but it seems like miraculous events keep unfolding this week. Besides the discovery of the red leaf and the freak winter storm that paralyzed the region…yesterday as I went to the mailbox I bundled up against the cold with my favorite bright green scarf and tiptoed my way across the snow and ice to collect the mail. I stood for a moment glancing over the assortment of envelopes and as I looked up I was face to face with a humming bird. It was only inches away from me and I could hear it's busy wings as it hovered there trying to determine what I was. It must have been attracted to the intense spring green of my scarf. I was stunned and delighted and all the more surprised because the temperature was in the mid 20s. There are several hummingbird species that live in western Washington year round and I believe my little visitor was an Anna’s Hummingbird. These are such enchanting little birds that you can’t help but feel singled out as special when you are visited by one of them. I found the photo above from Bird-Friends.com

Knowledge is Power!

Encaustic Workshops are starting soon and I have structured a special program specifically for the passionate beginner. Classes are held in my working studio with full access to all of my equipment and materials. This also means the number of students per session is limited. Smaller class size will result in lots of individualized attention for each participant. The classes are set up as 2-day immersive workshops designed to get you started and build your confidence or simply regain your enthusiasm for working with wax.

Day-1 We will cover all the basics and get you familiar with using the materials. This includes safe studio practices, demonstrations and supplier resources.

Day- 2 The second day will feature demos of specialized techniques and some of my secrets for creating unusual effects.

Space is limited so contact me if you wish to participate. First workshop takes place Dec 4 & 5 , 2010. The next workshop will be held on Feb 12 & 13 with additional classes slated for Spring and Summer 2011. Click here to inquire!

INScape Highlights

I don’t know where to begin… Last weekend’s opening event at the INScape Arts Building was an overwhelming success. Nearly 3000 visitors walked through the art studios, installations and corridors of the historic INS building. The Seattle Times featured a front page article highlighting the event and public radio station KPLU interviewed many of the participants (including me). This project has attracted some amazing and talented artists and performers who are making their own history and breathing new life into this 80 year old landmark. Too many to list them all but here are just a few worth mentioning:

The image above features dancers from Manifold Motion. The dancers are moving in a room filled with fresh soil. They occupy three spaces on the main floor where they will be performing until the end of November. For performance times and ticket information check out manifoldmotion.com. Artist Jen Mills filled an empty office space with beautiful crystalline vessels made from salt.

Mills' elegant bowl forms occupy the space where my Canadian friend once interviewed for his Green Card application when this was still a functioning INS office.

Up on the second floor artist, Helen Gamble, created an echo of the triple bunk beds that once stood here and accommodated immigrants in the former Chinese Men’s Dormitory.

Gamble installed rows of gauzy fabric that appear to float in the footprints of the old beds and transform the space into beautiful but ghostly barracks.

Across the hall Gail Howard created this powerful piece that spills out of the former infirmary. The overflowing sheets have been carefully knotted and represent the agonizing passage of time and the overwhelming desire to escape into a new life waiting just outside.

The ominous sound of water slowly dripping plays loudly in the background of Howard's installation aptly titled, Patience. The plunking sounds punctuate the idea of the long and tedious wait experienced by many immigrants.

What was once a caged courtyard has been turned into a temporary installation in a sort of "Urban Andy Goldsworthy" piece created by Sam Farrazaino. The bars and cage panels once surrounded the courtyard area to keep the inmates locked in. Farrazaino also happens to be the project manager for INScape.

Here's a peek into my new studio where I have already begun to work.

Many artists who came through over the weekend have lined up to apply for studio spaces that are still available. I am confident that this will soon be a destination for arts and culture in Seattle. If you missed the Open House I urge you to come by at the next opportunity. Something really special is emerging here. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello - it was wonderful to see so many longtime friends.

Cool Pool

In the lobby of the Henry Art Gallery sits an inflatable plastic pool filled with water that’s being circulated by an electric pump. Floating on the water’s surface are dozens of porcelain bowls in varying sizes. As the bowls are caught up in the swirling current generated by the pump, they gently collide into one another creating random chimes as they clank their way around the pool. The effect is like being in a Tibetan monastery during some kind of sacred bell ritual. This temporary yet ingenious installation is the work of French sound artist, Céleste Boursier- Mougenot. If you hurry you can still experience this for yourself. The pool will be on display until September 26th and you can find more information at henryart.org. Below is a video clip of a similar installation created in 2009.

Another big stand out for me from this month's gallery walk is the John Grade installation at Davidson Galleries. He first caught my attention at a Bumbershoot exhibition a few years ago. The artist will be discussing his work in two separate talks this month. The first will be at the Downtown Seattle Library on September 10th followed by a second talk at the Davidson on September 18th at noon.

August Arts:If you have an opportunity I recommend stopping by the TK arts building and walking through the warren of art studios there. One that stands out this month is the Shift Studio where you’ll find the quiet yet compelling ceramic work of Yun Hong Chang as part of a two-person exhibition with photographer, Kim Sciarrone. Using strands of her own hair, Chang weaves delicate crisscrossing webs and hand stitched seams onto her slumping ceramic vessels and forms. (see detail above)

While we’re on the subject of ceramics… the continuing show at Pacini Lubel features an eclectic and compelling group of ceramic artists and sculptors. The ethereal and narrative work of Debra Fritts always catches my eye. I like how she incorporates gauzy materials into her ceramic works. Her figurative pieces look as though they are waiting to share some tragic and beautiful story.

A few works by Adelaide Paul are also on display at Pacini Lubel. Her sculptural pieces are a form of "faux" taxidermy. She uses leathers and fabric to create “skins” that are then stretched over animal forms. I find them strangely compelling and exquisite.

As I sat down to compose this blog entry it was not my intention to focus on female artists, it just so happened that the works that stood out to me this month were all created by women. A lovely and encouraging coincidence. It also reminds me to mention that the Kiki Smith exhibit at the Henry will close in a few days on August 15th. So... I hope you will join me in celebrating some great works and the amazing women who are making their marks in the art world.

Opening Night - July 2, 2010

Just returned from ten magical days in Sun Valley and the opening of my Forces of Nature show. Opening night was a huge success complete with celebrity sightings and some possible commissions in the works. My gratitude goes out to all my dear friends and family for making this such a special and memorable evening. A heartfelt thank you also goes out to L'Anne and Casey of the Gilman Contemporary for providing such a beautiful gallery and the opportunity to exhibit my work in such a stunning space. I am still processing the many wonderful moments and will post more details later.

New Horizons

Here’s a little preview of a few paintings that will be in my upcoming show. This body of new work has been inspired by my memories of living in the Idaho mountains. These last few months have been one long painting marathon but I always break new ground and make good discoveries when I work this intensely before a an exhibition. And now the count down is on and my Forces of Nature show opens in a couple of weeks at the Gilman Contemporary in Sun Valley. The image above is titled River Bank III and below is a detail from a piece titled, Elements. The red landscape is Carnelian Vista 1, the first of three panels that make up a 3’x 10’ triptych that I will feature more of in my next post.

Living Large

Creative chaos. That’s what my studio feels like at this moment. I am painting like a whirling dervish to finalize all the work that will be part of my next solo exhibition. A large portion of it will feature oversized works like this 3’ x 10’ triptych that I am finishing up today. I am also including a 6’ x 6’ piece that’s comprised of nine panels. I’ll start posting more art images as I wrap up in the studio. The show, Forces of Nature, opens at the Gilman Contemporary in Sun Valley, Idaho July 2 - Aug 1, 2010.

What A Rush

Fearless! This is the single word I would use to describe the work of emerging painter, Richard Rush, whose artwork goes on display this month at the Gilman Contemporary. Rush’s large playful and abstracted compositions are often saturated with intense color and dotted with graffiti-like markings and figures. The details are tiny so you have to get up close to decipher the images that reveal his stories. This Idaho based painter works in multiple mediums and you can see the urban influences of his time spent living in New York and growing up in Chicago. His new works will be on display in a two person show featuring the landscapes of Abby Grosvenor, May 25th through June 25th at the Gilman Contemporary in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Richard Rush, a self-taught painter, creates works that are often dream-like, futuristic landscapes or scenes in which nature and technology are evolved and imagined. His work is an attempt to create a permanent record of a feeling that exists only in a moment, be it from a dream, a person or a place.

Curious?

Work continues to flow in the studio for my upcoming solo show this July but all work and no play makes for some dull dinner conversations. So…here’s one of the playful distractions I have discovered when I am in need of a little break. Ever wonder what your artwork would look like in a museum exhibition? Well now you can see your work displayed larger than life and presented in a world class museum setting. This entertaining software lets you upload your images and superimpose them into a museum or gallery setting and the results are really fun and inspiring. This is a great tool to visualize your work in a new environment. Check it out at dumpr.net.

Below is a triptych I am working on for my show. The three panels will be tiled into a single frame to make one long image. There will be several similar abstract landscape pieces like this in my "Forces of Nature" show.The exhibition opens July 2nd at the Gilman Contemporary in Sun Valley Idaho and runs through August 1st. My work is also still on display at the Alexis Hotel until August 3rd.

I am honored to be part of a three person show that opened at the Alexis Hotel this month. I am exhibiting work along with two amazing northwest artists, Troy Gua and Kenneth Susynski. Gua’s work features big graphic portraits in a punchy pop art style done in acrylic and resign. Susynski has a style that is more abstract with a vibrant energy and engaging compositions. I also have four encaustic pieces featured in this show that will be on display now thru August 3rd, 2010.

SEATTLE — (March 31, 2010) — The Alexis Hotel’s signature “Gallery Art Walk” will spotlight a new installation beginning Thursday, April 1, featuring three distinct local artists. The display features pop culture-inspired works by Troy Gua, gestural abstractions by Kenneth Susynski and botanical encaustic paintings by Alicia Tormey. The installation is part of the Alexis Hotel’s continued commitment to preserving and enhancing the local art community with its rotating installations. Hotel curator Barbara Shaiman oversees the hotel’s quarterly rotating exhibitions.

Troy Gua’s work is influenced by pop culture references, including everything from Ronald Reagan and Elvis, to Facebook and iPods. A multi-discipline artist, Gua assembles paintings, sculptures and photos that ask the audience to think – or even laugh. Often resin-coated and highly lustrous, Gua’s work is reflective, both literally and metaphorically, and offers a peek into his fascination with mainstream culture. His work has been featured all over the Pacific Northwest and can currently be seen at SAM Gallery

Raised in Germany, Kenneth Susynski cites his main influence as the fluidity of movement. His other influences include the cultural experiences he encountered while living in Germany, Turkey, South Korea and the UK. All of these influencers can be seen in Susynski’s works through vivid colors, swift brushstrokes and varied shapes. Mostly self taught, Susynski also studied at the Artist Trust EDGE Program. His work can be found locally at the C Art Gallery and SAM Gallery.

Alicia Tormey’s work features fields of color, marbled surfaces and splattered veins of paint which are layered with organic lines to create an enhanced look at nature. The final layers of her work are often polished to resemble a fired ceramic glaze. Tormey’s paintings have raised thousands for charity and are featured in the permanent collections of the Swedish Medical Center and private collectors throughout the Northwest. Her work can also currently be seen at SAM Gallery. Tormey is a graduate of the Art Institute of Seattle and studied encaustic painting at the Pratt Fine Arts Center.

All of the works on display in the Gallery Art Walk are available for purchase. Each piece has a label listing the artist’s name and contact information, as well as the price.

Wild & Wooly

The bizarre and the beautiful sit side by side in The Tame & The Wild - The March exhibition at the Pacini Lubel Gallery. On display are works from several gallery artists that feature animals and insects. The show is an eclectic mix of paintings and sculpture that provide a great way to usher in spring. Also on display this month…. A show titled Dress Envy at the Winston Wachter Gallery featuring the charming dress sculptures of Tori Ellison and Mielle Riggie among others. This show runs through April 23rd, 2010. Image on the left is the work of Ellison and on the right is a piece by Riggie.

These inspired me to share this dress sculpture I created several years ago made of cotton, wax and wire. The title of this piece is Sitting Pretty.

In The Studio: Finishing up some new paintings for the Alexis Hotel and working on my Solo show for July. These sunny Seattle days are making it hard to stay in the studio. There are some additional art venues coming up this month so stay tuned for updates.

If you love shoes, art and design you won't want to miss this inspiring exhibition Beth Levine: First Lady of Shoes opening today at the Bellevue Art Museum. Here's a blurb from the museum's show announcemet:

Be the first to see the work of one of the world's most influential shoe designers. Rising from shoe model (she was a size 4!) to award-winning designer, Beth Levine popularized high fashion mules, stilettos and boots, including Nancy Sinatra's white go-go boots from "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'." Now, Levine's unbridled energy and creativity come to life at BAM, the ONLY U.S. venue to showcase this fascinating exhibition.

In the book, Beth Levine Shoes by Helen Verin you can see an amazing portfolio of her designs and the BAM show runs until June 6, 2010. Joyce Gehl - Urban Density on display at Patricia Rovzar Gallery

A rich offering of artworks are on display this month in Seattle. Romantic and sensual fiber forms by Cameron Anne Mason are part of the MadArt Redux show at Foster White and these luscious encaustic paintings by Joyce Gehl are on display at the Patricia Rovzar Gallery. Gehl says “I know everyone else brings their own associations and sensibilities to help them understand and enjoy art. All I can do is make something I think is strong and compelling and that I could stand behind absolutely if someone chooses to make it part of their own home.” I look forward to seeing Gehl’s work in person. Also worth a look this month are the works of Wanxin Zhang and Sara Zin among others at the Pacini Lubel Gallery.

Studio Update: I shipped this little gem off yesterday and today I am putting the finishing touches on a commission that I will install this weekend. I am almost caught up now with my studio schedule. I still have to wrap up the five paintings that will be going to the Alexis Hotel (I will post images of this work soon) and then start preparing panels for my July show in Sun Valley. I may have to hire a studio intern this year but feeling very fortunate to have my work in such demand. To top it all off it’s a sunny January day here in Seattle. Miracles continue…

Art Acquisition

This painting was recently acquired by the Swedish Medical Center

The Swedish Medical Center in Seattle just purchased another one of my paintings for their permanent collection. They now have two of my pieces and I am thrilled and honored to be included in such an important corporate collection.

I had a special request to create a nest piece and this is the result.

Studio Update: These rainy Seattle days are keeping me inside the studio. I just finished up a commission and have a few more to complete for some very patient collectors. I will post the final images soon.

Bookscape detail by Katya Marritz

First Thursday Art Walk is tonight and here are a few shows worth mentioning. The first is a series of “Bookscapes” by Seattle artist, Katya Marritz. She is creating her own kind if visual poetry as she folds and sews these literary classics into textured and compelling sculptural statements. Marritz’s Bookscapes will be on display at the Zeitgeist Café now through Feb 3rd. Scroll down to see more images of these lovely book sculptures.

Also on my priority list for tonight is an exhibition presented by the Catherine Person Gallery featuring the work of Jessica Drenk and Patrick Kelley.

Drenk is an inventive sculptor and has a talent for reinventing everyday ordinary objects and transforming them into delicate and compelling artifacts. She uses toilet paper, pencils, coffee filters and other unexpected materials as a base for her work.

I have been a longtime fan of Drenk’s art. She first came to my attention because she often uses bee’s wax in her process. I look forward to seeing her work in person tonight. I am not familiar with Patrick Kelley’s art but from the exhibition information it looks like a good pairing of artists. Should be a great night to get out and see some art!

The Studio - January 1, 2010 - filled with works-in-progress.

A friend and I were talking about the New Year and the tradition of making resolutions. Instead of making resolutions for change my friend is going to state her intentions for the new year ahead. I like that idea so much that I am making my own list of intentions for 2010.

In 2010 I intend to be very productive.
I have one of my busiest art schedules ever this year and I welcome all the wonderful opportunities that have opened up for me. I have a solo show in July at the Gilman Contemporary and I will be participating in several group shows and working on commissions over the next twelve months.

The Alexis Hotel in Seattle will feature my work from 4/1 to 8/3 2010

I will have work on display in the Alexis Hotel in Seattle from April 1st to August 3rd in a show curated by Barbara Shaiman, Director of the Seattle Art Museum Gallery and Curator for the Alexis Hotel. Once the work is up I will post some installation photos.

In 2010 I intend to encourage and support the work of emerging artists.
Starting with a few new blog features this month. The first I call SPOTLIGHT . Here I will showcase the work of an emerging artist who has caught my attention. Beginning with ceramic artist Barbara Dunshee - Coming Soon - Look for the sidebar feature titled SPOTLIGHT for more information about Barbara and her work. Also beginning this month will be another new blog feature, The Hot Wire -where artists can post links to their websites, galleries, blogs, show announcements and other art related news – If you would like to contribute a listing to The Hot Wire please email your link with information to: art@aliciatormey.com and it will be posted to the new listings. I also intend to continue my Pay It Forward program so stay tuned for highlights from my growing art collection.

A real work-in-progress.

In 2010 I intend to be my best self in each moment and endeavor.
As I continue to devote my energies to my artistic practices this year I intend to focus on achieving a higher state of awareness and knowing well that part of me that is the most authentic. Making art touches me on so many levels: it is my profession and my daily meditation. It fills me up, it wipes me out, it challenges me and it thrills me. Creating art is the mechanism through which I am evolving. Through my daily studio practice I am becoming my truest and best self.

I am wishing you all a year of positive transformation and may all your good intentions be realized. Be well and creative in 2010.

Dressed for the Season

The Christmas Dress 2009

It’s a tradition in our home to celebrate the season in an unconventional way. This year instead of a tree we setup a Christmas Dress. It’s an old mannequin that I transformed into a holiday gown with evergreens, ornaments and feathers.

Another tradition in our neighborhood is the parade of Christmas boats – I love seeing the lights reflected on the water and they play holiday music that echoes out over the Puget Sound. It really put me in the spirit.

I'll be spending my holidays painting in the studio so I will post some images of new work soon. Until then I am wishing you all Happy Holidays and a joyful New Year.

Margie Livingston, Folded Painting Small 2009 - Greg Kucera Gallery

Last week I trekked out to soak up some area art shows and here are a few highlights. Starting with one of the bright spots from the 1st Thursday gallery walk : Margie Livingston at the Greg Kucera Gallery. The exhibit is titled Riff – New Paintings, and features a mix of 2d and 3d works. In some of her pieces Livingston removes the sub-straight entirely: no canvas, no paper and no wood to support her paintings – just pure paint as in this piece above titled Folded Painting. Not to take away from her works on canvas that are very captivating and when seen with her “paint sculptures” they take on a new depth. She started creating 3d objects to inform her paintings and now has come full circle with the paintings becoming three dimensional objects. The show runs until December 24th.

Another exhibition at the top of my "must see" list is A Concise History of Northwest Art at the Tacoma Art Museum. Many of the exhibition works are not featured on the museum website including my two favorite pieces in the show: Release the Sun, 1990–91 a multi panel piece by James Lavadour and Carl Morris’s Mountain Echo, 1955. The piece below is by Jeffery Simmons and is featured in this exciting show that runs until May 23, 2010. Well worth a visit!

As the month comes to a close it means a new rotation of gallery artists will open for the First Thursday Art Walk next week. Before it comes down I highly recommend the November show at the Davidson Gallery featuring the work of Robert Marx. His work is fantastic and has a compelling naive quality to it. My Second Nature show also closes this Saturday so if you planned on seeing the exhibition you only have a few days remaining to see the entire show. Some of my favorite pieces sold so when the show comes down the paintings will be gone to their new homes. For updates on the gallery check out the new Pacini Lubel Gallery Blog.

I was looking through my photos of the gems and discovered a few that I had not yet posted. The image above is one of the lost gems titled Jadeite. What I like is how quiet this painting is but when you examine it closely it has very complex layers. Some areas even appear to be floating and resemble fused glass. Below are a few more gallery images of the gems in groupings. It's been a great week in the studio and several more paintings from the show have sold. This means I'll have new work to share soon.

This year I have had the good fortune of steady art sales so I have decided to spread the “art love” if you will. I am calling it my Pay It Forward Program and every time I sell one of my own paintings I put a portion of my proceeds towards the purchase of another artist’s work. It’s one of those rare but wonderful Win/Win situations. I get to acquire a beautiful new piece of art and support the work of another artist too. Today I am feeling richly rewarded after several months of hard work. The opening of Second Nature was lovely and I want to say "Thank you!" to all the dear friends who came out on Thursday night to support me. I also want to extend a special thanks to those who traveled long distances to see the show and to those of you who have left me such kind comments here on my blog.

Many of the little gems have already sold and there is a possible commission in the works. The Seattle Times also ran a blurb about the exhibition and featured an image of my work in the Arts section of the paper. So here I am feeling grateful, content and inspired. The studio beckons and I need to start preparing for my 2010 exhibitions. I will be participating in several group shows starting next spring and I have a solo show slated for July 2010 in Sun Valley at the Gilman Contemporary. I’ll continue to track my progress and share my discoveries here as I make my way through the next creative journey. Well… it's finally here –Opening Night! Please join me at the Pacini Lubel Gallery for the opening of Second Nature. Tonight, Thursday, November 5th from 6 to 8 as part of the Seattle 1st Thursday gallery walk. This solo show features my most recent encaustic work. I have not seen the final installation so I will be experiencing the show for the first time tonight. Here’s what friend and fellow artist, Barbara Dunshee, posted to her blog about my work:

“I've recently been reintroduced to Alicia Tormey's work. I loved it before and her recent evolution is very exciting. Her new show, opening at Pacini Lubel Gallery November 5th, is called "Second Nature". A great title as her encaustics on wood are nature enhanced to a higher power. Her abstractions are landscape reminiscent but on varying planes of existence, simultaneously macro and micro. And simultaneously above and below water and sky and earth. Scale and place are wonderfully nebulous and I find myself hungrily searching each image for additional mind bending. And this is just from dropping into her studio while she was in progress. I'm eager to see the full body of work at the opening.”

I have enjoyed posting a daily gem these last few weeks leading up to the opening of my show. Thank you for following and to those who have left such generous and encouraging comments. For today’s post I am also including a few more of the larger works. There are several of these large paintings that will be featured in the Second Nature show but so much is lost when reducing them down to a post-it size preview. I am featuring two gems today: Corundum & Labradorite. Both stones reflect multiple colors. I think these two are good companion pieces as well. I am feeling the desire to paint today but it's not likely going to happen. I have too much going on with the opening on Thursday and guests arriving from out of town. I really feel it when I am away from the studio. Time spent creating helps keep me centered and I look forward to firing things up again after this crazy busy week. Tomorrow’s gem: Opal

This gem series piece is titled Andalusite, after the mineral known for its variations of green. I wanted to create a sense of intimacy in this by framing the view with delicate wisps of grass that I scratched into the surface. There are only a few days remaining now until the show opens this Thursday. It will be the first time all the work is displayed together instead of piled around my studio in various stages of completion. I will post two more gems tomorrow: Corundum and Labradorite

This gem is titled Serpentine. The colors in this piece are reminiscent of the stone but I thought the plant form also suited this title. Yesterday I delivered the rest of the artwork to the gallery and the show will be installed on Tuesday. I am eager to see how it will all come together in the space. This is one of seven botanical works that will be featured in the Second Nature show along with the gems and landscapes. Below you can see how the paintings play off of each other. I imagine these as if you were to enter one of my larger landscapes and return with clippings and specimens for further study. Hard to believe the show opens in just 5 more days. I chose to feature Amber as today’s gem. Below is a detail so you can see the under currents of this painting. There are many subtle layers to this piece that are not coming through in the photo. This painting easily jumps back and forth between the abstract and representational imagery. I will post new work from the botanical series tomorrow.

Today’s gem piece is titled Jasper and in doing my gem research I learned that jasper and agate are the same stone. This has the tones and translucency of an agate and someone told me they see a figure skating or running in it. I was hoping for an abstracted tree form and I love the playfulness of this piece. I’ll keep tomorrow’s posting a surprise – not sure if it will be a gem or a botanical or perhaps both.

Today’s gem is Sapphire and the colors in this piece are very intense. The blue veining that runs through it has the appearance of colored glass. I find the vibrancy of this color pallet very energizing. Tomorrow’s gem: Jasper
